Why I Tell People to Not Read More Books

As an author and speaker, I thought I would explain the value of content overload through more books, podcasts, seminars, and more. The irony, of course, is I am in the business of all of the above.

1️⃣ People often don’t have an information gap.

People already know how to improve, how to get fit, how to eat healthy, how to save money, how to be a good partner. The problem isn’t information.

2️⃣ People often have an implementation gap.

Success is the uncommon practice of common knowledge. People have more information within them than ever. People have more access to information than ever. People have more access to free/cheap information than ever. What stops all of these people from optimizing success? Implementation.

3️⃣ More books can simply be more information not practiced.

Living up to what the knowledge I have obtained is a mighty challenge indeed. I think it’s a lifetime journey of simply striving to live up to what I’ve already learned. I “can” read another book or attend another conference. If it’s not my central focus, I will simply be adding to the “information” pile in my journey.

4️⃣ More reading/listening can be an excuse to not practice.

Good usages of time can be the enemy of best usages of time. What I’ve noticed in my personal journey, I can easily want to spend more time learning about fitness than actually doing the fitness exercises. I can use the “healthy” excuse of doing something good with my team as opposed to doing what I know would be best.

5️⃣ More focus on less content leads to great growth.

Just as the concept of riches in niches captures the power of focusing on a few, the same is true with growth content. Too many areas of focus lead to too few achievements.

6️⃣ Knowledge can puff up; implementation will build up.

If you’ve ever met the person who puffs up their ego by what they’ve read and what they know, this can be a problem. Implementation needs not brag or boast as the results speak for themselves.

7️⃣ Without implementation, there is no transformation.

All of the beauty and power of results comes from implementation. Without implementation, there are no results.
